I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The first story is about connecting the dots.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;My second story is about love and loss.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, &lt;i&gt;Toy Story&lt;/i&gt;, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;My third story is about death.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;When I was young, there was an amazing publication called &lt;i&gt;The Whole Earth Catalog&lt;/i&gt;, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Stewart and his team put out several issues of &lt;i&gt;The Whole Earth Catalog&lt;/i&gt;, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay &lt;span class="nfakPe"&gt;Hungry&lt;/span&gt;. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay &lt;span class="nfakPe"&gt;Hungry&lt;/span&gt;. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Stay &lt;span class="nfakPe"&gt;Hungry&lt;/span&gt;. We invite you to join the funeral in the room&lt;br /&gt;that has been prepared in the gym'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their&lt;br /&gt;colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who&lt;br /&gt;was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company&lt;br /&gt;itself. The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were&lt;br /&gt;ordered to control the crowd within the room.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up.&lt;br /&gt;Everyone thought: 'Who is this guy who was hindering my progress?&lt;br /&gt;Well, at least he died!'. One by one the thrilled employees got closer&lt;br /&gt;to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became&lt;br /&gt;speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as&lt;br /&gt;if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul. There was a&lt;br /&gt;mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see&lt;br /&gt;himself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;'There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth:&lt;br /&gt;it is YOU. You are the only person who can revolutionize your life.&lt;br /&gt;You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your&lt;br /&gt;realization and your success. You are the only person who can help&lt;br /&gt;yourself. Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your&lt;br /&gt;friends change, when your parents change, when your partner changes,&lt;br /&gt;when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you&lt;br /&gt;go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the&lt;br /&gt;only one responsible for your life. 'The most important relationship&lt;br /&gt;you can have is the one you have with yourself'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties,&lt;br /&gt;impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your&lt;br /&gt;reality. On Thursday, as I watched the TV coverage of Ratan Tata unveiling the Tata Nano in New Delhi , I was struck by a sudden thought: Ratan has&lt;br /&gt;finally inherited JRD's title. He is clearly the most respected and admired businessman in India today. And then, I thought back to that phase, 10 years ago, when the Tatas&lt;br /&gt;struggled to reinvent themselves in the post-JRD era. I thought of how &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Ratan was perceived then: awkward, untalented, unworthy of the job&lt;/span&gt;, out of his depth and full of vindictive anger against many of the satraps of the JRD regime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was a time of change. New groups were springing up out of nowhere.&lt;br /&gt;The certainties of the old protectionist economy and the&lt;br /&gt;license-permit-quota raj had collapsed. Reliance had made the&lt;br /&gt;transition from being seen as a parvenu to being regarded as an&lt;br /&gt;industrial behemoth. The Infosys legend, personified by Narayan&lt;br /&gt;Murthy's personal simplicity and marked by the world-class skills of&lt;br /&gt;his high-tech partners, had just begun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At Tata headquarters, however, the crises mounted: record losses at&lt;br /&gt;Tata Motors, the much-derided plan to launch the Indica, criminal&lt;br /&gt;charges over Tata Tea's alleged links with Assam militants,&lt;br /&gt;allegations of foolishness in the sale of Tata Oil Mills' assets, a&lt;br /&gt;plan to launch a domestic airline with Singapore Airlines that was&lt;br /&gt;comprehensively scuttled and more. And many of us wondered if we were&lt;br /&gt;watching India 's greatest industrial group diminish before our very&lt;br /&gt;eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The house that JRD had built was crumbling. Poor, shy, inept Ratan&lt;br /&gt;seemed unable to cope.&lt;br /&gt;And yet, a mere decade later, here was the same Ratan being feted by&lt;br /&gt;the world's media as the man who reinvented, if not the wheel, then&lt;br /&gt;certainly the motorcar. A man who did what no global carmaker believed&lt;br /&gt;was possible: to build a car that looked this good and drove so well&lt;br /&gt;for so low a price. And here was a new Ratan, his legendary shyness&lt;br /&gt;temporarily in remission, as he joked about calling the car the&lt;br /&gt;'Pachauri' (after the environmentalist who chose to attack the Nano as&lt;br /&gt;a pollution threat, a charge that the Nano has easily beaten) or even&lt;br /&gt;the 'Mamata' (after the nutcase) or 'Despite Mamata'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The following day, the Nano managed the impossible: there was not one&lt;br /&gt;negative review of note and the raves kept coming. To the chagrin of&lt;br /&gt;his rivals, Ratan even kept to the price commitment. Though input&lt;br /&gt;costs had gone up, he said, the Tata's would still price the basic&lt;br /&gt;Nano at a lakh because "a promise is a promise".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The triumph of the Nano was merely the crowning glory in a series of&lt;br /&gt;successes. Throughout the 21st century, the Tatas have beaten every&lt;br /&gt;doom-laden prediction and silenced every critic. Tata Motors came back&lt;br /&gt;from losses of over Rs 600 crore to make huge profits on the back of&lt;br /&gt;the Indica, the all-Indian car that had been Ratan's dream, and â€" to&lt;br /&gt;his detractors â€" the vanity project that would sink the company..&lt;br /&gt;Infosys had fulfilled its early promise but even then Tata Consultancy&lt;br /&gt;Services (TCS), a company that had been little noticed in the 1990s,&lt;br /&gt;had grown to dominate the Indian IT sector, its size dwarfing Infosys.&lt;br /&gt;Tata Steel had defied Rusi Mody's predictions, had been whittled down&lt;br /&gt;to a slim and lean company, and had even gone ahead and bought Corus,&lt;br /&gt;a global giant, after a bidding war during which Ratan had shown&lt;br /&gt;nerves of steel. And even as Ratan was unveiling the world's cheapest&lt;br /&gt;car, the Tatas were on the verge of clinching the purchase of Jaguar,&lt;br /&gt;one of the world's great luxury cars.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How had so many people, who should have known better, got Ratan so&lt;br /&gt;wrong? Business pundits will tell you â€" in the kind of detail that I&lt;br /&gt;will never be able to master â€" just how the Tatas turned themselves&lt;br /&gt;around. I'm sure they are right. But remember, most of these pundits&lt;br /&gt;were the same guys who wrote Ratan off to begin with, a decade or so&lt;br /&gt;ago.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a few theories of my own based on the interviews I have done&lt;br /&gt;with this otherwise reclusive man on the remarkable rise of Ratan&lt;br /&gt;Tata.&lt;br /&gt;*       Ratan realised India was changing much before the other big houses&lt;br /&gt;did. He recognised that the old feudal, paternalistic structure that&lt;br /&gt;had worked so well in the JRD era, where the old man was the emperor&lt;br /&gt;and the companies were run by viceroys, would not work in the new&lt;br /&gt;India . He professionalised the Tatas, democratised the management,&lt;br /&gt;abandoned the feudalism (remember Rusi Mody's massive birthday&lt;br /&gt;tamashas in Jamshedpur?) and made the group adopt a low-key,&lt;br /&gt;matter-of-fact, get-things-done style that had no room for satraps and&lt;br /&gt;stars.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*       He saw the wisdom of embracing the future. Hence, the focus on TCS.&lt;br /&gt;And hence the determination to go global: we talk about Corus, the&lt;br /&gt;Pierre, Tetley etc, but the big successes are only the tip of the&lt;br /&gt;iceberg. Years ago, Ratan told me that he was determined to use Indian&lt;br /&gt;managerial ability and Tata capital to globalise the group. In 2000,&lt;br /&gt;this seemed overly ambitious and grandiose. But he has grabbed the&lt;br /&gt;opportunities for globalisation like no other Indian industrialist&lt;br /&gt;has.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*       At the same time, he put his faith in young India . The team behind&lt;br /&gt;the Nano is young the top guy is 35 and overwhelmingly Indian. So it&lt;br /&gt;was with the Indica, a truly Indian car. One of the dichotomies of&lt;br /&gt;Ratan's personality is that while he can be shy and reticent in social&lt;br /&gt;situations, he is warm, outgoing and able to motivate teams at work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*       He told the government to go to hell. No group has faced more unfair&lt;br /&gt;governmental harassment than the Tatas â€" right from the Tata Tea&lt;br /&gt;case where they were framed by the Assam government to the telecom&lt;br /&gt;tangle where they were bullied by an arrogant Dayanidhi Maran. Not&lt;br /&gt;once did Ratan agree to pay a bribe. He wouldn't even go and complain&lt;br /&gt;to Manmohan Singh (who has immense respect for him). Instead, he stood&lt;br /&gt;his ground. If in the process, he lost a project, he lived with the&lt;br /&gt;loss but maintained his principles. So it has been with Mamata&lt;br /&gt;Banerjee's foolish Singur campaign: he will never buckle under it or&lt;br /&gt;try and buy her off.&lt;br /&gt;*       He let his heart guide him. Early in his career, when Nani&lt;br /&gt;Palkhivala persuaded the Tatas to liquidate the Central India Mill&lt;br /&gt;even though it could have been turned around with an infusion of just&lt;br /&gt;Rs 50 lakh, an angry and disgusted Ratan gave his own annual Tata&lt;br /&gt;salary bonus to the officers of the company. "They were perfectly&lt;br /&gt;blameless people who had now lost their jobs through no fault of&lt;br /&gt;theirs because of a bad corporate decision. They had homes to run and&lt;br /&gt;children to educate," he remembered in an interview to me in 2005.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*         It was his heart that told him to build the Nano. He would see&lt;br /&gt;families of four on a single scooter. The father would keep his son in&lt;br /&gt;front and the mother would hold on to her baby. He wondered why it was&lt;br /&gt;not possible to give such families a car where they could be safe and&lt;br /&gt;comfortable for the same price. Plus, they would keep their dignity.&lt;br /&gt;There are many reasons for building a car. But this, I think, is the&lt;br /&gt;best one of all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*       And finally, I think, India caught up with the Tatas. Over the last&lt;br /&gt;decade the middle class came of age, tired of the crony capitalism of&lt;br /&gt;the old bania class, was inspired by engineering success stories like&lt;br /&gt;Infosys and began to wonder why it wasn't possible for everyone to do&lt;br /&gt;business honestly.&lt;br /&gt;The Tatas had gone through good times and bad times. But they had&lt;br /&gt;always given nearly all of their profits to charity. They had&lt;br /&gt;consistently refused to break the law and encourage corruption. Older&lt;br /&gt;generations of businessmen thought they were silly and shortsighted to&lt;br /&gt;do so considering that everybody else played the game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But now India has changed. We finally have a strong and vocal middle&lt;br /&gt;class that prizes honesty above all else and that has contempt for the&lt;br /&gt;sleazy politicians and the crony capitalists of old.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;When we see Ratan Tata refusing to pay bribes, refusing to lick&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;politicians' boots and refusing to bend the rules and still taking the&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;Tatas from strength to strength, still buying the world's best&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;companies, and still reinventing the rules of the car industry well&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;then, we know that there is a better way.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's possible to be &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"&gt;honest and principled.&lt;/span&gt; And still beat the rest of&lt;br /&gt;the world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;That's the strength of the new India .&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 153, 0);font-size:130%;" &gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;If Ratan Can do this miracle then I am sure that I was worst than Ratan(10 years ago). I struck a conversation in French with the young girl. She talked about the travails of living in an iron curtain country, until we were roughly interrupted by some policemen who, I later gathered, were summoned by the young man who thought we were criticising the communist government of Bulgaria.\u003c/span\&gt;\u003c/p\&gt;\n\u003cp\&gt;\u003cspan style\u003d\"font-size:10pt;color:#252525\"\&gt;The girl was led away; my backpack and sleeping bag were confiscated. I was dragged along the platform into a small 8x8 foot room with a cold stone floor and a hole in one corner by way of toilet facilities. I was held in that bitterly cold room without food or water for over 72 hours.\u003c/span\&gt;\u003c/p\&gt;\n\u003cp\&gt;\u003cspan style\u003d\"font-size:10pt;color:#252525\"\&gt;I had lost all hope of ever seeing the outside world again, when the door opened. I was again dragged out unceremoniously, locked up in the guard&amp;#39;s compartment on a departing freight train and told that I would be released 20 hours later upon reaching Istanbul. Discussions about the travails of our journey thus far and our future challenges went on for about four hours. I was once a victim of this myself, but luckily have also been laid off more than once so I realized early on that no job was secure. I know it’s a big step for someone to leave a job they have been at forever. If you are still working a full time job, while hopefully trying to find ways to make passive income, try asking yourself a few questions. What would happen if you lost your job today? What if they fired you tomorrow? What would you do? Thousands of people get laid off every single day, but for many it will be a blessing in disguise. Sure, they will be scared at first but many will either find better jobs that they enjoy doing, or they will finally decide to try that business they have been thinking about for years. Do you already have an idea of what you would do, but someone else thinks that idea is stupid, or maybe they just say “You can’t do that” and they repeate it enough to convince you? I have a task that may help you. Spend ten minutes each day for a week imagining what your life would be like if you could do what you really wanted to do. When the government does not give importance to Hinduism, the question of being a mouthpiece does not arise. Our restraint is misinterpreted. Our massacre is neglected. They presume that we will bear everything with folded hands. Our anger has lost its fuel to burn, we know only the art of pardoning. They will torture us and massacre us and we will bear it coolly... it has become a law of nature. I don't think they will take cognisance of this mouthpiece of Hinduism. He may be a saint but he is not a politician. His theory of non-violence denies self-defence and self-interest. The division of the nation was an unnecessary decision. What was the percentage of the Muslim population as compared to the population of the nation? There was no need for a separate nation. Had it been a just demand, Maulana Azad would not have stayed back in India. But because Jinnah insisted and because Gandhi took his side, India was divided, in spite of opposition from the nation, the Cabinet. An individual is never greater than a nation, Nana. But Gandhi has stared considering himself greater than the nation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nana:&lt;/strong&gt; Jinnah wanted to be the prime minister...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nathuram:&lt;/strong&gt; But we never opposed a Muslim prime minister. In a democracy you cannot put forward your demands at knife-point. Jinnah did it and Gandhi stabbed the nation with the same knife. He dissected the land and gave a piece to Pakistan. We did picket that time but in vain. The Father of our Nation went to perform his paternal duties for Pakistan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nana:&lt;/strong&gt; The Cabinet consented to that...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nathuram:&lt;/strong&gt; The Cabinet also consented to the demand of Rs 55 crores today...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nana:&lt;/strong&gt; They are also equally responsible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nathuram:&lt;/strong&gt; Of course, they are responsible! Gandhi blackmailed them with his fast unto death. His body, his threats to die are causing the destruction -- geographical as well as economical -- of the nation. Today, Muslims have taken a part of the nation, tomorrow Sikhs may ask for Punjab. The religions are again dividend into castes, they will demand sub-divisions of the divisions. What remains of the concept of one nation, national integration? Why did we fight the British in unison for independence? Why not separately? Bhagat Singh did not ask only for an independent Punjab or Subhash Chandra Bose for an independent Bengal?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nana:&lt;/strong&gt; Pandit, if you will write this, people will get agitated, the government will get agitated, the government will have to bow down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nathuram:&lt;/strong&gt; I had written this before. At the time of Partition, when Suharawady surrendered only due to political pressure, but only Suharawady, not his followers...they went on with the massacre. Gandhi started his fast, the Hindus put their weapons down. I still remember that day. A poor Hindu told Gandhi, 'I am putting down my weapons because I don't want your death on my conscience but I am staying alone with my family in the Muslim area. That night, before leaving Hyderabad I visited his home. The whole household was screaming, weeping, his only eight-year-old son had been killed by the Muslims. He had no weapon to defend himself. He threw his son's body on my lap and said, "Take his blood to your Mahatma. Tell him, if he goes on fast again, he can finish it by drinking not orange-juice but my son's blood." I could not say anything. Gandhi was the Father of my Nation. For a moment, I was tempted to pull out the Muslims from their homes and chop them down. But I controlled myself. Violence for self-defence is justified, otherwise it is an ill-cultured act. I returned to where Gandhi was staying but he had already left by car. Of course, there would have been no point in meeting him... he would only have prayed for both the killer and the victim.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nana:&lt;/strong&gt; Pandit, I sincerely feel that we should seek the advice of Tatyarao.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nathuram:&lt;/strong&gt; No. Because I am going to assassinate Gandhi even if Tatyarao tells me not to. Then why involve him unnecessarily? I, neither want Tatyarao's involvement nor participation. He has suffered a lot for the nation. Now it is our turn. Tatyarao had once sad, if Gandhi is a political saint, then he should follow in the footsteps of Ramdas Swami. I could have assassinated him easily then, but I was convinced that his assassination was to be a punishment and a sentence against him, and I would execute him. I wanted witnesses for the execution but there were none. I did not want to escape after the execution as there was not an iota of guilt in my mind. I wanted to surrender, but surrender to whom?
